Maradadi: Swahili word meaning ‘beautiful’.
Shibori: Japanese word meaning ‘squeezed’.
Indigo: Blue dye from the Indigofera tinctoria plant
The story began in Africa and continues in Australia with knowledge from Japan. Shibori techniques of squeezing, binding and folding fabric are the first steps of imparting pattern. Dipping the prepared cloth into an indigo vat is a meditative, slow process which can not be hurried. Both require practice and patience to bring the inner vision to outer reality.
Fortunately the result is not predictable; the dye penetrates where it will; nature takes its course.
